TRANSPORT OF PRESSES

japanese heavy lift
Loading of one of several big components of the second-hand car-body presses in the port of Yokohama by shipboard cranes of the SAL heavy lifter

spacer Almost the total stowage capacity of the Hamburg registered heavy lift vessel mv “Paula” of SAL Schiffahrtskontor Altes Land GmbH, Steinkirchen, had been taken up by a consignment of second-hand car-body presses shipped by Bremen-based TRANSGERMA Riedl & Kiehntopf GmbH from Japan to France.

In April 2001 TRANSGERMA had been ordered to ship two used car-body presses including all auxiliary equipment from Japan within a stringent time schedule to final destination in Le Mans, France. The delivery schedule had been tied-up with succeeding assembly carried out by Scholpp Montage GmbH as main contractor on behalf of French importer Schuler-Spiertz of Strasbourg. In view of very limited operational space in the ambience of the foundations in Le Mans, any congestions during delivery onto the site had to be avoided.

Within the first week of July all presses with auxiliary equipment had been taken on board in the port of Yokohama by the heavy-duty shipboard cranes of mv “Paula” from quayside as well as from barges alongside vessel. The shipment was comprising 153 pieces including a greater number of exceeding 100 tons, aggregating 1,550 mtons or 2,700 frts, respectively in total. Stowage of the components caused some difficulties and took much time in view of the fact that most pieces according to their construction, packaging and heavy weights could not be over stowed. Therefore several additional tween decks had to be fixed within the box-shaped hold of 82.9m length and 16.5m width to met the extensive demand of stowage floor.

After three days loading, stowage and cargo securing operations, mv “Paula” left port of Yokohama heading for Europe. On this routing the vessel also called at Masan to load a giant main diesel engine including parts of up to 425 tons to be installed into one of Maerk’s mega container vessels presently under construction at Odense Shipyard, Denmark. In the French port of Le Havre mv “Paula” discharged the consignment of 153 components of the car-body presses by her own gear exactly in accordance with the time schedule on 23rd August 2001.

The heavy-lift vessel “Paula” is equipped with two board cranes of 320 tons each and a third crane of 200 tons capacity capable to lift pieces of up to more than 700 tons in coupling. Her owners SAL very recently put options with Sietas shipyard of Hamburg-Neuenfelde to build another two heavy-lift freighters of the same type (Sietas 161) as sister ships of mv “Paula” for delivery in 2003. The 9,500 tdw new buildings will also be equipped with an extensive main deck hatch cover of 82.9m by 16.5m giving full access to the entire hold.
