HEAVY TRANSPORT OF TANKS
|
|
 |
Two tanks, which are the biggest ever tobe built in France and are capable of containing 950 tons of CO2, have been installed at the Yara facility at Montoir de Bretagne.
Having crossed part of France by road in two abnormal load consignments weighing 368 tons each, they were first conveyed down a river, then transferred by sea aboard the 'White Sea' as far as berth n°4 at the Montoir de Bretagne general cargo and container terminal.
The tanks were unloaded on 4th April by cargo handling firm Sogebras, which also provided ship`s agent services for the operation.
In view of their quite exceptional dimensions (50 metres in length and 5 metres in diameter), the tanks were handled with the aid of two 500-ton cranes before being conveyed by road to the new Yara France facility located at the Montoir de Bretagne multi-bulk cargo terminal will open in the early summer of 2007 and will be Yara’s number six CO2 terminal in Europe. It will form part of an unparalleled maritime network for the distribution of CO2.
Associated with the other five production units, the facility will be served by a fleet of three dedicated vessels. This system allows very large volumes to be transported within very short time-scales and above all permits any stock shortages to be avoided.
Yara’s Montoir de Betagne terminal will be the largest CO2 terminal in France and will rank sixth in Europe.
* CO2 is a non-flammable, odourless gas produced in the manufacture of ammonia. It is used in many industrial sectors, such as food processing or the transportation of foodstuffs.
